The first touch philosophy

First touch is the most under-coached fundamental in grassroots football. Coaches spend hours on shooting and passing while ignoring the technique that decides whether either of those is even possible. A good first touch wins the next second of the game. The SimpleDrills first-touch library treats it as a foundational skill — drilled early, refreshed often, embedded in every other technical theme.

13 first touch drills

Drills focused on first touch as the primary technical or tactical theme. Each drill includes setup, run time, equipment, and age range.

Coaching first touch from U7 to adult

U7 — Confidence with the ball

First touch at U7 is about confidence, not technique. Sole rolls, stop-and-go, freeze on command. The goal is for every U7 to feel like the ball is their friend. Don't introduce side-of-foot receiving yet — it's a cognitive layer too far.

U8–U9 — Deliberate touches

U8 and U9 is where the first touch becomes deliberate. The sole-stop habit forms here. Cushion control follows. Body shape — facing where the ball is coming from, eyes up before it arrives — is the priority.

U10–U11 — Direction and scanning

Cushion control and directional first touch are the priorities. The scanning habit attaches itself to first touch — look before you receive becomes measurable. Conditioned games (touch must take you forward) accelerate this.

U12–U13 — Under pressure

First touch under pressure is the U12–U13 demand. The technique exists; the test is whether it survives a defender at five yards. Drills should include increasing degrees of pressure. Players who can't take a clean first touch under pressure at this age won't survive at U14+.

U14–U18 — Decision-making

U14+ first touch is purely about decision-making. The touch is the first move of the next phase. Open up the body, take it into space, play forward — touch and action are one move. Coach the body shape before receiving; the touch becomes a consequence of orientation.

Adult amateur — Consequences

Adult amateur first touch is wildly variable. Some players have it, some don't. Coaching it from scratch in a 90-minute weekly session isn't realistic. Use conditioned games where a poor first touch costs possession — adults learn from consequences.
