Session blocks

1

Arrival Triangle

0 min

U8s need an immediate ball at their feet on arrival. The triangle setup occupies anyone who shows up early without requiring coach attention. Late arrivals join in instantly.

2

Traffic Lights

0 min

The U8 warm-up. Keep the energy high — your enthusiasm sets the session tone. By session 3 of using this drill, even the shyest kids respond to your colour calls.

3

First-Touch Gates

0 min

Run the basic version (no progressions). Each pair gets ~10-12 receiver reps. Don't insist on technical perfection — the gate provides the feedback. Praise the attempts.

4

3v3 Future Fit Game

0 min

Apply the first-touch work in match scenarios. Constraint for the last 6 minutes only: 'first touch must go forward'. Don't introduce the constraint until kids are warmed into the game — earlier and it kills engagement.

5

Walking circle + reflection

0 min

Whole squad in a circle, walking pace, ball passed slowly. Ask one question: 'Who got the ball through a gate today?'. Hands up moment — every kid feels seen. End with a hands-in cheer.

What you'll need from yourself

Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.

!Common problems

Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
