U10 First Touch & Progression
A 60-minute session building the under-coached fundamental — cushion, half-turn, and progress the ball forward under light pressure.
⏱Session timeline
▦Session blocks
Pass and Move (Pairs)
0 minStandard 20×16 area. The two-touch maximum constraint from minute 4 is the perfect lead-in — first touch sets up the pass, every rep. Keep pairs tight (4–5 yards apart) so passes are firm and reps are clean.
Cushion Control (Pairs)
0 minFoundation block. Skip the directional and one-touch progressions — keep it pure cushion-and-return for the full 14 minutes. Repetition over complexity. Coach the relaxed receiving foot. By the end of this block, every player should be cushioning consistently with both feet.
Half-Turn First Touch
0 minBuild directly on the previous block. Run the full progression: 12 minutes basic, 6 minutes with coach calling targets, 4 minutes with passive defender. The progression matters — players need the basic shape locked in before adding scan/decision/pressure layers.
Possession box (3v1 → 4v2)
0 minFree 3v1 rondo in a 10×10 area for 6 minutes — every receiver is forced into half-turn shape because the defender behind them is real. Then 4v2 in a 12×12 for 8 minutes — adds passing options and scanning demand. End with 2 minutes of free play to send them home enjoying the ball.
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
