The one cue that matters
First touch out of the feet into space, ready for the next action
◆Why this drill works
Under U9, the most important variable is touches per minute. Drills with shared balls or queues halve this. One ball each — for the first 5–8 minutes of every technical session — gives every kid 200+ touches without queuing. This drill cycles through six basic touch patterns. By session 6, every kid in the squad can confidently use both feet, the inside, outside, and sole.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Every player has a ball inside the square.
- Coach demonstrates a touch pattern, then players repeat for 30 seconds:
- 1. Inside-right, inside-left (toe taps left/right).
- 2. Sole rolls (sole pulls ball back, 6 in a row).
- 3. Inside-outside (inside-right, outside-right; switch foot).
- 4. Stop, turn, go (sole stop, 180-degree spin, dribble away).
- 5. V-pull (sole back, inside push to opposite side).
- 6. Free dribble — show me your favourite move.
- Total run: 6 patterns × 30 sec = 3 min, then 5 min of free dribble with coach calling 'change foot' at random.
