Why this drill works

Under U9, the most important variable is touches per minute. Drills with shared balls or queues halve this. One ball each — for the first 5–8 minutes of every technical session — gives every kid 200+ touches without queuing. This drill cycles through six basic touch patterns. By session 6, every kid in the squad can confidently use both feet, the inside, outside, and sole.

How to run it

  1. Every player has a ball inside the square.
  2. Coach demonstrates a touch pattern, then players repeat for 30 seconds:
  3. 1. Inside-right, inside-left (toe taps left/right).
  4. 2. Sole rolls (sole pulls ball back, 6 in a row).
  5. 3. Inside-outside (inside-right, outside-right; switch foot).
  6. 4. Stop, turn, go (sole stop, 180-degree spin, dribble away).
  7. 5. V-pull (sole back, inside push to opposite side).
  8. 6. Free dribble — show me your favourite move.
  9. Total run: 6 patterns × 30 sec = 3 min, then 5 min of free dribble with coach calling 'change foot' at random.
