▦Session blocks
Traffic Lights
0 minStandard Traffic Lights with the sole-roll stop as the 'red' command. Every red light is a sole stop — reinforces the most important first touch habit before the session begins. 8 minutes, every player with a ball.
Ball Mastery — Sole and Inside
0 minBall mastery circuit: sole rolls forward, sole rolls back, inside taps left/right, stop-and-go. One coaching point for this block: 'soft foot to receive — your foot gives a little when the ball arrives.' Demonstrate with a gentle cushion of a rolled ball. 12 minutes, every player with a ball.
Directional Receiving
0 minPartner passes from 5 yards. Receiver takes a directional first touch into one of two cone gates (left or right of their body). Not stopping dead — moving the ball. Coach calls the gate just before the pass arrives: 'left!' or 'right!' Player must react and touch toward that gate. 6 reps each, swap roles.
4v4 — First Touch Rule
0 min4v4 game. Rule: if you stop the ball dead (ball stationary for more than 1 second), possession goes to the other team. This rule forces directional touches rather than stopping. Call it firmly the first 3 times, then trust players to self-regulate. End positively: 'who can remember the three touch types we did today?'
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
