Ball Mastery Circuit
Ball mastery at U8 is about repetition of a small number of touches until they feel automatic.
◆Why this drill works
Ball mastery at U8 is about repetition of a small number of touches until they feel automatic. The circuit format delivers high rep volume (each player is working constantly at their station), introduces variety within structure, and the rotation gives natural breaks without long queues. By the end of 15 minutes a player has done 40–60 reps of four different touches. That's more quality touches than most U8 training sessions deliver in total.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Station 1 — Sole roll: roll the ball forward with the sole of the right foot, stop it with the sole of the left. Alternate feet. Keep it rolling, not bouncing.
- Station 2 — Inside tap: tap the ball between the inside of the right and left feet while standing still. Keep it close — no bigger than foot-width between touches.
- Station 3 — Outside flick: push the ball slightly forward with the outside of the right foot, then catch it with the outside of the left. Build a rhythm.
- Station 4 — Stop and go: dribble with the inside of the foot for 4 steps, stop the ball dead with the sole, hold for 2 seconds, dribble again.
- Rotate stations every 3 minutes on the coach's signal. Play through all 4 stations.
