The passing philosophy
Passing is the spine of every other technical skill. What separates a good passer from a player who 'can pass' is what happens before the ball arrives — the scan, the body shape, the decision. Drilling passing in isolation produces players who can pass cones; drilling it inside rondos and conditioned games produces players who can pass under pressure. The SimpleDrills passing library skews toward the second approach.

Coaching passing from U7 to adult
U7 — Don't formalise it
True passing drills aren't appropriate at U7. The 3v3 format produces passes naturally. If a U7 drill mentions passing, treat it as 'play with your partner' — not technical coaching. The inside-of-foot technique can emerge in play; don't queue them up to drill it.
U8–U9 — Inside of the foot
Inside-of-foot passing is the technical priority. Cone gates, pair passing in motion, simple two-touch limits in mini-games. Don't teach the outside of the foot yet — they need one technique automated first. Plant foot position is the most coachable detail.
U10–U11 — Variety enters
Driven pass, lofted pass, switch of play, the rondo. Players can now hold the 'pass and move' concept for 30 seconds at a time. The coaching point shifts from 'how to pass' to 'when and where to pass'. Two-touch limits become a useful constraint.
U12–U13 — Range and shape
9v9 widens the passing distances dramatically. U12s and U13s need to develop short passes under press, mid-range switches, and longer driven balls. Two-footed passing becomes non-negotiable. Body shape on receiving — open hips, half-turn — is the priority that unlocks everything else.
U14–U18 — Decisions, not technique
Players have the basic skills by now; the work is decision-making. When to play forward, when to recycle, when to switch. Conditioned games (max two touches, must reach end line in five passes) produce far more change than isolated drills.
Adult amateur — Hidden technique
Adult amateur passing drills should look like the game. Pure technical work feels like a waste of training time to players who have only 90 minutes a week. Use rondos, positional games, and conditioned scrimmages. The technical work is hidden inside competition that adults actually engage with.
