Session blocks

1

Arrival Pairs Passing

0 min

One ball between two, 6 yards apart. Pass and receive, call the partner's name before every pass. Starts the moment 4 players arrive. Late arrivals find a partner and join. The name-calling habit established here carries through the whole session — and the whole season.

2

Gate Passing — Inside of Foot

0 min

Two cones 1m apart as a gate, 5 yards away. Pass through the gate with the inside of the foot. One coaching point: 'plant foot beside the ball, pointing at the gate.' Demonstrate plant foot position — this is the most common failure point at U8. 8 passes each direction, both feet.

3

Triangle Passing Circulation

0 min

Three cones in a triangle, 6m sides. Ball goes round the triangle: receive-pass-move to next cone. Each player touches the ball every 3 seconds. After 4 minutes add a second ball — two balls circulating in the same triangle. Run for 12 minutes total. The second ball forces scanning and timing.

4

4v4 — Passing Bonus

0 min

4v4. Bonus: if the goal is scored directly off a pass (receiver first-touches into the net, or scores after a give-and-go), it counts 2 goals instead of 1. This incentivises passing as a route to goal without requiring tactical understanding. Call the double goal loudly — 'that's TWO!' — when it happens.

What you'll need from yourself

Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.

!Common problems

Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
