The dribbling philosophy
Dribbling is the joy of football for most kids, and the skill that takes the longest to develop. Modern grassroots coaching has gone through phases of being almost suspicious of dribbling — 'pass it, pass it' from the touchline. The SimpleDrills approach rejects that. Dribbling and passing are partners; players who can't beat a player can't create the moments where the perfect pass becomes available.

Coaching dribbling from U7 to adult
U7 — Pure joy
Dribbling is the joy of football at U7. Sharks and minnows, traffic lights with the ball, free dribbling in a grid. Don't introduce skill moves yet. Quantity of touches matters more than quality. Praise effort, not outcome.
U8–U9 — Vocabulary forms
Inside and outside of the foot touches form the U8–U9 dribbling vocabulary. Slalom patterns, cone-zigzag, head-up dribbling. The 'big toe to little toe' instruction lands at this age. Skip skill moves like the step-over until U10.
U10–U11 — Skill moves
U10 and U11 are the perfect age for skill moves. Body feints, drag-backs, step-overs. The cognitive readiness is there. Use 1v1 channels so the move has a context. Don't ban dribbling in tight central areas; players need to learn judgement, not avoidance.
U12–U13 — Functional moves
9v9 dribbling work focuses on functional moves under pressure. The coaching shifts from 'how to do the move' to 'when to use which move'. The U12 with three reliable moves is more dangerous than the U13 with eight unreliable ones.
U14–U18 — Positional
U14+ dribbling is positional. Winger dribbling, full-back dribbling, midfielder dribbling all look different. Match clips become a teaching tool. The 'when to dribble vs when to pass' question is more important than any technical refinement.
Adult amateur — Game-based
Adult amateur dribbling work is rarely productive in isolation. Use SSGs that reward beating a player (bonus goal if you beat someone first) — that produces more change than dedicated drills.
