Why this drill works

Gamified dribbling where each ball is 'treasure' and one or two pirates try to steal it. U7s love the narrative frame — they'll run harder and protect their ball more fiercely than in any neutral dribbling exercise. The narrative is the coaching.

The drill in three phases

Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action

Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish

The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

How to run it

  1. Pirates try to kick balls outside the grid. Players whose ball leaves the grid must do 5 sole taps to re-enter.
  2. Players who keep their ball safe for 2 minutes earn a 'point'.
  3. Rotate pirates every 90 seconds — every child wants a turn as pirate.
  4. Final round: all players are pirates. Last ball inside the grid wins.

    ?Frequently asked questions

What age group is Pirate Treasure suitable for?
This drill suits youth. Keep it unopposed for younger players to build confidence; add a defender for older players to make it game-realistic.
How many players do I need for Pirate Treasure?
This drill works well with around 10 players. With fewer, reduce the groups or rotate players through; with more, set up multiple stations so everyone stays active rather than queuing.
How long does Pirate Treasure take?
Allow around 3 minutes to set up and 15 minutes to run it — about 18 minutes in total. It fits well as the technical or main block of a session, leaving time for a warm-up and a game.
