The one cue that matters
Head up to see the space beyond the defender
◆Why this drill works
Cones scattered across a grid become 'buildings in a town'. Players dribble between them without knocking any over. Builds close-control and spatial awareness at U7 without any instruction — the constraints do the teaching. Every player active every second.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Players dribble through the grid, avoiding cones.
- Rule: if you knock over a cone, you stop, stand it back up, then continue.
- Add time pressure: how many times can you lap the grid without knocking a cone over?
- Variation: Coach removes cones one at a time — the town gets less crowded, players need to use more space.
- Variation: Coach adds 2 'sharks' (no ball, try to knock balls away). Players must protect their ball AND avoid cones.

?Frequently asked questions
What age group is Cone Town suitable for?
This drill suits youth. Keep it unopposed for younger players to build confidence; add a defender for older players to make it game-realistic.
How many players do I need for Cone Town?
This drill works well with around 10 players. With fewer, reduce the groups or rotate players through; with more, set up multiple stations so everyone stays active rather than queuing.
How long does Cone Town take?
Allow around 3 minutes to set up and 15 minutes to run it — about 18 minutes in total. It fits well as the technical or main block of a session, leaving time for a warm-up and a game.
