Why this drill works

Overload scoring trains players to recognise and exploit numerical advantages. At U10-U12 this is one of the most important tactical concepts: the ability to see and use the overload is the fundamental attacking intelligence of all football.

How to run it

  1. 4v4 SSG. Goal scored from an overload position (2v1, 3v2) = 2pts, standard = 1pt.
  2. Coach pauses twice to point out missed 2v1 or 3v2 opportunities.
  3. Progress: 3v3 plus 1 neutral always with the team in possession.
  4. Count overload goals vs standard goals.
