The one cue that matters
Compact shape when defending, spread when attacking
◆Why this drill works
The pressing trigger SSG teaches the team when to press collectively. Most teams either press everything (exhausting) or nothing (passive). This game rewards pressing at the right moments — back passes, slow play, balls wide — while the scoring rules do the coaching for you.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Standard 7v7 or 9v9. Two bonus rules: (1) win ball from opposition back pass in their half = 3pts. (2) win ball from a slow first touch = 2pts. Standard goal = 1pt.
- First 5 minutes: coach loudly identifies every back pass. 'BACK PASS — TRIGGER!' Defending team must press immediately.
- Next 8 minutes: remove verbal prompts. Teams recognise triggers themselves.
- Final 5 minutes: re-introduce prompts only when teams miss triggers. Gap between prompted and unprompted tells you how much has embedded.
