Counter-Attack Transition SSG — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Forward pass or carry within 3 seconds of winning — fast transitions are proportionally more dangerous
◆Why this drill works
The transition from defending to attacking in the moment of winning possession is where counter-attacks are born. A team that can immediately play forward after winning the ball — rather than recycling possession — produces far more goal-scoring opportunities from a given number of turnovers. This conditioned game installs the forward-play habit on transitions.

▶How to run it
- 7v7 with two goals. Rule: within 5 seconds of winning the ball, the team must play forward into the attacking half or earn a free kick to the opposition.
- 5-second count is strict: coach counts aloud for the first 10 minutes.
- Bonus: goal scored within 8 seconds of winning possession = 3pts. Standard goal = 1pt.
- Progression: reduce the forward-play window to 4 seconds. Increases the urgency of transition decision-making.
- Post-game: how many transitions resulted in shots? What made the successful ones work?
