The one cue that matters
Building intensity progressively, not going flat out too early
◆Why this drill works
Pre-season fitness with a small squad is difficult to run effectively — most fitness circuits assume 15+ players. This drill is designed for the common grassroots reality: 8 players at the first pre-season session, half of them in poor aerobic condition. Four stations of 4 minutes each produce 20 minutes of continuous activity at varying intensities. The circuit format means no one is waiting and every player's rest is active.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- STATION 1 — Shuttle runs (4 min): 10m shuttle, jog 10 touches, sprint back. Continuous. No ball.
- STATION 2 — 1v1 rondo (4 min): 4v1 if enough players, 3v1 if not. Full intensity. Defender sprints to cone on winning possession.
- STATION 3 — Passing pairs under time pressure (4 min): pairs 12m apart, 40 passes in 90 seconds. Track and try to beat each round.
- STATION 4 — Ball carry and turn (4 min): player dribbles 15m, stops ball, turns 180, dribbles back. Add a 5-second rest then repeat.
- Whistle every 4 minutes: rotate clockwise. All players on a station simultaneously.
- After 16 minutes (4 rotations): 4-minute free SSG. Cooldown.
