Why this drill works

Pre-season fitness with a small squad is difficult to run effectively — most fitness circuits assume 15+ players. This drill is designed for the common grassroots reality: 8 players at the first pre-season session, half of them in poor aerobic condition. Four stations of 4 minutes each produce 20 minutes of continuous activity at varying intensities. The circuit format means no one is waiting and every player's rest is active.

How to run it

  1. STATION 1 — Shuttle runs (4 min): 10m shuttle, jog 10 touches, sprint back. Continuous. No ball.
  2. STATION 2 — 1v1 rondo (4 min): 4v1 if enough players, 3v1 if not. Full intensity. Defender sprints to cone on winning possession.
  3. STATION 3 — Passing pairs under time pressure (4 min): pairs 12m apart, 40 passes in 90 seconds. Track and try to beat each round.
  4. STATION 4 — Ball carry and turn (4 min): player dribbles 15m, stops ball, turns 180, dribbles back. Add a 5-second rest then repeat.
  5. Whistle every 4 minutes: rotate clockwise. All players on a station simultaneously.
  6. After 16 minutes (4 rotations): 4-minute free SSG. Cooldown.
