GK Set Position and Angles

Most goals conceded at U10–U12 go in because the GK is in the wrong position when the shot is taken, not because the save was technically too hard.

Why this drill works

Most goals conceded at U10–U12 go in because the GK is in the wrong position when the shot is taken, not because the save was technically too hard. The angle principle — GK bisects the angle between shooter and both posts — reduces available net and converts difficult saves into easy ones.

The drill in three phases

How to run it

  1. Mark centre of goal and both posts with cones. Mark 5 shooting positions at different angles.
  2. For each position: ask GK 'Where should you stand?' GK moves. Coach confirms or redirects.
  3. 5 reps from each position: shooter serves, GK must be in correct position before shot. Static first.
  4. Progress: GK starts from middle of goal. Shooter moves to one of 5 positions. GK adjusts. Ball immediately on reaching position.
  5. Final: moving GK. Shooter dribbles across edge of box. GK adjusts continuously.
