The one cue that matters
GK advancing to the correct angle cone before setting — position then save
◆Why this drill works
GK angle play — reducing the shooting angle by coming off the line — is the most impactful positional concept available to a GK. A GK who advances to the correct position on a 1v1 reduces the available goal from 7.32m to under 2m. Most grassroots GKs either stay on the line or come too far. This drill builds the correct position.

▶How to run it
- Place cones at three positions in front of goal marking correct GK angle positions for ball locations at 18 yards, 12 yards, and 8 yards centrally.
- GK starts on line. Coach stands with ball at each cone position. GK advances to the corresponding angle cone. Check: GK should be bisecting the shooting angle.
- GK does not know which cone the coach will use. Coach points — GK moves immediately to the correct position.
- Introduce lateral movement: coach moves from right channel to central. GK must track the ball movement and adjust angle continuously.
- Progress: live 1v1. Striker runs from halfway. GK advances and sets angle. Count: clean saves, fumbles, goals.

- GK advancing too far — if the striker can chip, the GK has come too far
