GK Long Distribution — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Head up before distributing — GK has identified the target before striking
◆Why this drill works
Long GK distribution — the goal kick, the punt, the drop kick — is the set piece that occurs most often in grassroots football. Most GKs distribute long with no target and no intention. This drill builds the habit of identifying a target before the distribution and aiming for it, making every goal kick a deliberate offensive action.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- GK distributes from various positions: left side of box, right side, central. Target player positioned at three heights: short (20m), medium (35m), long (55m+).
- First 5 reps: target player stands still. GK aims to land ball within 5m of them. Count successes.
- Add movement: target player moves laterally before the distribution. GK must track and adjust.
- Introduce a competition: 3 points for landing on target player, 2 points for within 5m, 1 point for between the wings.
- Final 5 minutes: team in position. GK distributes to a forward making a run from a realistic goal kick scenario.
