GK Set Position and Ready Stance — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
GK in set position before the ball is played — not reacting from a static flat-footed stance
◆Why this drill works
The ready stance — weight forward, hands at hip height, eyes on the ball — is the foundation of all goalkeeping. A GK who starts in the wrong position concedes more goals from reaction saves than from technique failures. This drill builds the correct stance as automatic muscle memory through repetition at the right age.

▶How to run it
- GK stands in goal. Coach walks around naming body parts: weight on toes, slight forward lean, hands hip-height, eyes on ball.
- Coach gently rolls balls from various angles, 3-5 yards. GK must be in set position before each ball is played.
- Introduce a verbal cue: coach says SET — GK adopts stance. Pause. Then ball is played.
- Progress: coach varies the timing between SET and play. GK must hold the stance until the ball moves.
- Final 5 minutes: light shooting from 5 yards. GK practices dropping into set position before each shot.
