Possession Fitness Hybrid — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Possession under pressure — the team that keeps the ball avoids the physical task
◆Why this drill works
The possession fitness hybrid combines the technical benefit of a possession game with the physical demand of a fitness circuit. When possession is lost, the losing team immediately completes a brief physical task before rejoining. This format maintains the football quality of the session while adding significant cardiovascular conditioning without dedicated fitness time.

▶How to run it
- 5v5 possession in a 20x20m grid. No goals. Two defenders.
- Rule: when the defending team wins the ball, the team that lost possession must sprint to a cone 10m away and back before rejoining.
- Physical penalty on loss: varies each round — sprint, 5 squat jumps, 5 press-ups. Announce before each round.
- Coach tracks time in possession per team. Target: 70%+ time in possession as the skilled team. Adjust personnel to challenge.
- Final 5 minutes: free possession game, no physical penalty. How much of the possession habit has embedded?
