🎯
The one cue that matters
Maximum sprint intensity — not aerobic jogging pace in a small-sided game

Why this drill works

The small-space high-intensity game is the most time-efficient conditioning format available for grassroots football. A 4v4 on a pitch 20x15m played at full intensity for 4 minutes produces the same physiological demand as a 10-minute jog, with the addition of football-specific decisions, sprints, and agility. One 15-minute block of this format produces measurable conditioning benefits.

How to run it

  1. Mark a 20x15m pitch with two small goals. 4v4. Maximum intensity from minute one.
  2. Rounds of 4 minutes on, 2 minutes off. Three or four rounds.
  3. No coaching during rounds — the coach's job is to enforce the intensity. If players are walking during a round, the round restarts.
  4. Change team compositions between rounds to vary the competitive dynamic.
  5. Count: total distance covered by each player if GPS is available. Target is 100m+ per minute during work periods.
