Dynamic Stretching Pre-Match
Dynamic stretching before football activates the muscular and neurological systems required for match intensity without the performance reduction associated with static stretching.
◆Why this drill works
Dynamic stretching before football activates the muscular and neurological systems required for match intensity without the performance reduction associated with static stretching. This 10-minute routine builds the warm-up habit that prevents the soft-tissue injuries that cluster in the first 20 minutes of poorly-prepared matches.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- High knees — 20m forward, 20m back. Exaggerate knee height.
- Heel flicks (butt kicks) — 20m forward, 20m back. Heel to glute.
- Lateral shuffles — 20m each direction. Low centre of gravity, feet don't cross.
- Hip openers — walking lunges with a hip rotation at the bottom of each lunge.
- Arm circles and shoulder rolls — football is a whole-body sport.
- Final 3 minutes: gradual pace build with ball. Pairs passing at walking pace, then jogging, then 75%.
✦Coaching points
Praise when you see
- Full range of motion on each movement — partial dynamic stretching produces partial preparation
- Gradual pace increase — don't go from static to sprint
Correct when you see
- Players going through the motions — dynamic stretching should be genuinely dynamic, not gentle sways
- Rushing the routine to get to the game — 10 minutes is the minimum before high-intensity play
