How to run it

  1. Mark two half-spaces with cones: channels between the outside edge of the penalty area and the touchlines.
  2. Midfielder starts 30 yards out. Two passive defenders in shape.
  3. Coach calls HALF-SPACE RIGHT or HALF-SPACE LEFT. Midfielder drives into the called channel.
  4. On entering: option A shoot, option B cut-back pass, option C switch to far side.
  5. Progress: defenders become active on entry.

?Frequently asked questions

What age group is Half-Space Carry suitable for?
This drill suits U13–adult. Keep it unopposed for younger players to build confidence; add a defender for older players to make it game-realistic.
How many players do I need for Half-Space Carry?
This drill works well with around 14 players. With fewer, reduce the groups or rotate players through; with more, set up multiple stations so everyone stays active rather than queuing.
How long does Half-Space Carry take?
Allow around 5 minutes to set up and 15 minutes to run it — about 20 minutes in total. It fits well as the technical or main block of a session, leaving time for a warm-up and a game.
