Why this drill works

Close control under physical pressure is a distinct skill from open-space dribbling. At U13+, players who can shield, turn, and find space with a defender within arm's reach gain significant match influence. This drill builds the skill through progressive pressure.

How to run it

  1. Players dribble in a 15x10m grid. One passive defender per player who shadows only.
  2. Defenders become active: can try to touch the ball but not tackle. Dribblers shield.
  3. Add base-touch rule: dribblers must touch home cone every 15 seconds.
  4. 2v2 in a 10x8m grid: keep the ball or reach the end line.
