Why this drill works

The offside trap, when executed correctly, is the most efficient defensive action available. One movement by a coordinated back four creates an offside without tackling, without running. Most grassroots teams attempt it unreliably because the trigger — stepping up simultaneously — isn't drilled. Thi

How to run it

  1. Back four in a line 30 yards from goal. Coach stands in the middle with a ball and a whistle.
  2. On whistle: back four steps up together 5 yards. One single fluid movement. Coach checks they're aligned.
  3. Attackers placed 2 yards behind back four. Repeat: on whistle, back four steps up, attackers are now offside.
  4. Progress: coach plays a through-ball as the whistle sounds. Back four steps up, letting ball run. GK communicates — 'OFFSIDE, KEEPER'S BALL!'
  5. Live game: attacking team gets 2pts for beating the trap. Defending team gets 2pts for clean offside call.
