Nearest player pressing immediately on loss of possession

Why this drill works

The 3-5 seconds after losing possession are the highest-value defensive window. Squads that counter-press instinctively win an outsized proportion of turnovers. This drill trains recognition (trigger) and execution (immediate press) as automatic responses.

How to run it

  1. 9v9 in 50x35m. Play normally for 30 seconds to establish flow.
  2. Coach calls FREEZE mid-play. Team in possession immediately becomes defending. Stopwatch starts.
  3. Defending team has 5 seconds to win the ball back. Coach counts aloud.
  4. If not recovered in 5 seconds, drop into shape — no more pressing until next trigger.
  5. Remove FREEZE cue — any natural turnover triggers counter-press. Award 3pts for goal within 7 seconds.
