Counter-Press Trigger — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Nearest player pressing immediately on loss of possession
◆Why this drill works
The 3-5 seconds after losing possession are the highest-value defensive window. Squads that counter-press instinctively win an outsized proportion of turnovers. This drill trains recognition (trigger) and execution (immediate press) as automatic responses.

Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action

▶How to run it
- 9v9 in 50x35m. Play normally for 30 seconds to establish flow.
- Coach calls FREEZE mid-play. Team in possession immediately becomes defending. Stopwatch starts.
- Defending team has 5 seconds to win the ball back. Coach counts aloud.
- If not recovered in 5 seconds, drop into shape — no more pressing until next trigger.
- Remove FREEZE cue — any natural turnover triggers counter-press. Award 3pts for goal within 7 seconds.
