Compact Mid-Block — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Entire back four shifting together before the ball arrives
◆Why this drill works
The mid-block sits compact between halfway and the penalty area, forces opponents wide, and gives the team a genuine chance to win the ball in an organised way. U12-U13 squads that hold this shape for 10-minute blocks significantly reduce goals conceded. This drill builds the shape through pattern repetition.

▶How to run it
- Set two lines of four in mid-block shape across the pitch.
- Coach plays ball wide right. Full back four shifts: RB presses, RCB covers, LCB narrows, LB tucks in. Midfield mirrors.
- Ball returns to middle. Shape resets. Play wide left — mirror on other side.
- Introduce four live attackers. Defenders maintain shape without chasing.
- Full 9v9: defending team earns a bonus point for turnover using compact block.
