The fundamentals philosophy
Fundamentals — ball mastery, simple combinations, the technical base — are the foundation everything else builds on. For U7–U9, fundamentals are 80% of the session. For older squads coming back from a long layoff, fundamentals occupy week one of pre-season. The SimpleDrills fundamentals library emphasises repetition with the ball over instruction; players get better through touches, not lectures.

Coaching fundamentals from U7 to adult
U7 — The whole session
U7 fundamentals sessions ARE the whole session. Maximum ball contacts, minimum queueing. Sole rolls, freezes, taps, dribbling in space, mini-games. The 2026–27 Future Fit 3v3 format is built around this principle — fewer players, more touches, simpler decisions.
U8–U9 — Pair work emerges
U8 and U9 fundamentals layer simple combinations onto the U7 base — partner passing, pair dribbling, the first technical games involving two players. The session arc moves from individual to pair work to small games.
U10–U11 — Refinement
Fundamentals refine — better technique, faster execution, head-up while controlling. The drills look similar but the standard rises. Still earn 40% of session time at this age.
U12–U13 — Maintenance
Fundamentals become maintenance work — 15-minute blocks at the start of sessions to keep the technical base sharp. The main session moves on to tactical and combination work.
U14–U18 — Pre-season only
Fundamentals drop out of weekly sessions. Reappear in pre-season reactivation work, and occasionally after long layoffs. The base is assumed by this age.
Adult amateur — Selective
Adult fundamentals are deployed selectively — usually in the first week of pre-season, or when bringing in a new player who needs to bed in. Most adults find pure technical work tedious; embed it in competitive activity.
