Late-Arrival Square
Most grassroots sessions start with 4 players and grow to 14 over the first 10 minutes.
◆Why this drill works
Most grassroots sessions start with 4 players and grow to 14 over the first 10 minutes. This square absorbs each arrival into the existing activity in 5 seconds — no resetting, no awkward 'wait at the side' moments. Pairs pass and move inside the square. New arrivals join the nearest pair, a triangle forms, then split when the next arrives. The ball never stops moving and every player is touching the ball within 10 seconds of walking onto the pitch.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Pairs spread inside the square, each pair has a ball.
- Pass to your partner, then move into space (don't stand still).
- Receiver opens their body, takes a touch, passes back.
- Heads up — call your partner's name before passing.
- When a new player arrives, they join the nearest pair (now a 3) until the next arrival splits it again.
- Coach calls 'inside foot only' / 'two touch' / 'one touch' to progress.
