Why this drill works

The numbers passing warm-up is the most cognitively demanding routine warm-up in football — and the most underused. Each player has a number (1 to 12). The ball must always pass from number 1 to 2 to 3, etc., regardless of where players are standing. When two or three balls are added simultaneously, players must track multiple balls and their own passing sequence. By the end of 10 minutes, players are warm physically and sharp mentally — a combination no jogging warm-up achieves.

How to run it

  1. Number players 1 to 12 (or however many you have). Players spread randomly.
  2. Ball starts with number 1. Player 1 passes to player 2. Player 2 to player 3. Sequence continues to the highest number, then wraps back to 1.
  3. Players move constantly — don't stand in the same spot after passing.
  4. After 3 minutes: add a second ball. Now two balls circulate in sequence simultaneously.
  5. After 5 minutes: add a third ball. Three balls, same sequence.
  6. Optional debrief: 'how do you know where the ball is coming from next?' — players must track two numbers ahead, not just the previous pass.
