Decision Warm-Up
Most U12 warm-ups are physical — jogging, stretching, paired touches.
◆Why this drill works
Most U12 warm-ups are physical — jogging, stretching, paired touches. The decision warm-up adds a cognitive layer that primes players for the tactical work that follows. By calling out the pass recipient before the ball arrives, players are scanning, making decisions, and communicating while still at low physical intensity. Research on skill acquisition suggests that cognitive priming before technical practice accelerates learning. Practically: a squad that spends 10 minutes thinking about the game before training will absorb the session's tactical content faster.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Establish a 6v2 rondo. Outer players keep the ball away from the 2 defenders.
- Rule 1 — Call the name: before playing a pass, the player with the ball calls out the recipient's name. They must pass to that person.
- Rule 2 — Receive with intent: the receiver must call out the name of their next pass as they receive the ball. Decision made before touch.
- If a player passes to someone other than who they called, the ball goes to the defenders.
- After 5 minutes, add Rule 3 — directional call: player must also call which foot they want the pass to ('left', 'right').
- Defenders who win the ball swap with the player who made the error.
