Composure on the ball under pressure

Why this drill works

Players use the sole roll to escape pressure — drag the ball back with the sole, then accelerate in a new direction. Trains a functional use of sole control rather than pure ball mastery repetition. Particularly useful for U9–U10 players who sole-stop fine but don't yet use it to change direction.

How to run it

  1. Players dribble toward one end zone. Before entering, they must perform one sole roll (drag back) to change direction.
  2. They then dribble toward the opposite end zone and repeat.
  3. Add a passenger: one 'defender' (walks) tries to disrupt. Player uses sole roll to evade.
  4. Increase defender speed gradually: walk → jog → 70%. Players now using sole roll reactively.
