Why this drill works

Every player dribbles in a grid. On 'FREEZE!' they sole-stop and look up to spot a free cone (or a colour the coach calls). Builds the sole-stop habit alongside the head-up scan. Two coaching points delivered in one simple game.

How to run it

  1. All players dribble freely inside the grid.
  2. Coach calls 'FREEZE!' — every player must sole-stop the ball.
  3. Coach then calls a colour (e.g. 'ORANGE!') — first player to run to an orange cone (leaving their ball) earns a point.
  4. Players return, collect their ball, and restart dribbling.
  5. Vary the freeze call speed — longer gaps, then faster. Builds reaction.
