Why this drill works

Adult grassroots sessions need games that feel competitive and produce the game moments coaches actually want to develop. The quick transition game creates the counter-attack situation automatically by rewarding the conceding team with an immediate 3v2 counter. This means every goal creates a high-intensity reaction moment, and every period of possession has defensive concentration built in. No stopping to explain — the rule creates the coaching outcome.

How to run it

  1. 8v8 normal game. When a goal is scored, play doesn't restart from the centre.
  2. The scoring team nominates 3 players who immediately counter-attack in the direction of the goal just scored.
  3. The defending team must get 2 players back to defend. The other 6 hold their positions.
  4. 3v2 plays out: if the counter scores, it counts as a goal. If the defenders win possession, play resumes normally.
  5. Play continues for 20 minutes with this rule active throughout.
