Why this drill works

Adult grassroots sessions need high-intensity game activity with fast transitions and clear competitive stakes. The 3v2 wave format achieves this by creating continuous rapid sequences — each team alternates between attacking 3v2 and immediately defending 2v3. No long resets, no waiting in queues, everyone active. The 3v2 overload means attacking teams should score regularly enough to stay motivated, while the defending pair still has enough defensive opportunity to create competitive resistance. At adult level the transition pressure — immediately becoming defenders after attack — replicates the physical and cognitive demands of the last 20 minutes of a match.

How to run it

  1. Set up the pitch with goals at each end. Two teams wait at opposite ends.
  2. Team A sends 3 players into the pitch. Team B sends 2 defenders to defend their goal. GO.
  3. Sequence ends when: goal is scored, GK saves, defender wins possession, ball goes out.
  4. Immediately: the 3 Team A players retreat to defend their goal. Team B sends 3 new players to attack. Team A sends 2 defenders in.
  5. Continue with no reset — the sequence flows continuously. GK stays in goal throughout.
  6. First to 10 goals wins. Losers do 10 press-ups or run to the touchline and back.
