Possession to Penetration
U16 squads who can retain possession sometimes struggle to know when to penetrate — they keep the ball safely when forward options exist, or rush forward when patient possession would create a better opportunity.
◆Why this drill works
U16 squads who can retain possession sometimes struggle to know when to penetrate — they keep the ball safely when forward options exist, or rush forward when patient possession would create a better opportunity. Possession to Penetration trains the decision by making both options scoreable but asymmetrically rewarded: 5 passes scores 1, one penetrating pass scores 3. The reward differential mirrors match reality — a through-ball or penetrating run is worth more than possession, but possession enables penetration. Players who understand this ratio start making better forward decisions under pressure. The 3-second window after a successful gate pass is deliberately tight — it forces an immediate decision rather than allowing the team to reset into safe possession once the risk has already been taken, which is exactly the moment most teams waste a hard-won penetrating pass by playing sideways instead of forward.
◇Variations and progressions
- Single central gate — reduce to one central gate instead of two per half, forcing the team to commit to a specific attacking channel.
- Bonus for third-man penetration — award a 4th point when the penetrating pass is played by the third player in the sequence, reinforcing combination play.
- Time-pressure version — add a 15-second shot clock per possession, removing the option to hold the ball indefinitely without penetrating.
- Reduced-numbers version — run it as 7v7 in a tighter area for squads without a full group, keeping the gate mechanic identical.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Set up the pitch with 2 gates per half (8m either side of centre, 15m in from halfway).
- Teams play normal possession football. Referee counts consecutive passes per possession.
- 5 consecutive passes by one team = 1 point. Coach or player calls it aloud.
- A pass that travels through a gate (ball rolls between the two cones) = 3 points.
- After a penetrating pass through the gate, the receiving player has 3 seconds to play forward. Then normal play resumes.
- First to 20 points. Play multiple games — teams learn the penetration decision across repeated exposures.
✦Coaching points
Praise when you see
- Pressing as a unit to win the ball back
- Quick decisions in tight space
- Support angles either side of the ball carrier
- Playing forward immediately in the 3-second window after a gate pass rather than resetting
Correct when you see
- No support for the ball carrier — offer angles
- Standing off in defence — press the ball as a unit
- Everyone clustering around the ball — spread out to create space
