Shooter setting body shape before the ball arrives

Why this drill works

The gap between unopposed shooting and match shooting is mental. This drill introduces a passive defender who closes down without tackling, forcing the shooter to commit. The presence changes body shape and decision-making without injury risk.

How to run it

  1. Shooter receives a pass from the side. Passive defender starts 4 yards behind.
  2. Defender walks toward shooter after the pass — no tackling, job is to crowd the space.
  3. Shooter takes maximum two touches before striking.
  4. Swap roles every 3 attempts.
  5. Progress: defender becomes semi-active — can attempt a block, no physical challenge.

?Frequently asked questions

What age group is Shooting With Pressure suitable for?
This drill suits U10–U13. Younger players can use a bigger target or closer range; older players should add a defender and a goalkeeper to increase the pressure.
How many players do I need for Shooting With Pressure?
This drill works well with around 12 players. With fewer, reduce the groups or rotate players through; with more, set up multiple stations so everyone stays active rather than queuing.
How long does Shooting With Pressure take?
Allow around 3 minutes to set up and 12 minutes to run it — about 15 minutes in total. It fits well as the technical or main block of a session, leaving time for a warm-up and a game.
