9v9 Position Rotation
Structured position rotation for U12–U13 squads where specialist positions are beginning to emerge.
◆Why this drill works
Structured position rotation for U12–U13 squads where specialist positions are beginning to emerge. Every player spends 10 minutes in a position outside their normal role before returning. Builds empathy across the squad and gives coaches intelligence about who is adaptable across multiple positions. At this age, positional specialisation starts to harden quickly, and without deliberate intervention players can end up boxed into one role for years based on little more than where they happened to stand at age nine. A structured swap, run occasionally rather than as a one-off, keeps genuine tactical flexibility alive in the squad and often reveals a player whose best long-term position is not the one they've settled into by habit.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Play 9v9 for 8 minutes in normal positions.
- Whistle: swap 3 players on each team into a position they don't normally play. Inform them in advance.
- Play 8 more minutes. Coach observes adaptation.
- Return all players to normal positions for a final 8 minutes. Note: do they feel more empathy for the position they just covered?
- Debrief: ask each 'swapped' player what they noticed from the different position.
✦Coaching points
Praise when you see
- Every pass followed by movement into space
- Reading where the space appears as others rotate
- Coordinated movement keeping the shape
- A player asking teammates for help settling into an unfamiliar position rather than pretending to already know it
Correct when you see
- Passing then standing still — the rotation is the point
- Rotating into a teammate's space — read each other
- Movement without purpose — it must create or exploit space
- A player visibly checked out once moved from their preferred position — this is exactly the attitude the drill is meant to address
◇Variations and progressions
- Targeted swaps — rather than random selection, deliberately pair a central defender with a forward, or a winger with a full-back, so the positions being swapped are ones that will genuinely inform each other tactically.
- Written debrief — ask each swapped player to note one thing they found harder than expected in the new position; read a few out to the group afterward.
- Seasonal repeat — run this drill every 6–8 weeks with different swap pairings, building a genuine picture of squad versatility over a season rather than a single data point.
- GK included — for a squad comfortable with it, briefly include the goalkeeper in an outfield swap and a confident outfield player in goal, extending the empathy exercise to the position most players never experience.
