First Session Culture Builder — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Players encouraging each other — any peer praise in session one sets the tone for the season
◆Why this drill works
The first session of pre-season establishes the culture for the entire year. How the coach runs it, how players are greeted, whether effort is praised over outcome — these signals compound over a season. This session is explicitly designed as a culture-building opener: fun, inclusive, high energy, no pressure. Technical quality is secondary. Belonging and enthusiasm are the objectives.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Free play for 10 minutes. All players, all with a ball. Coach greets every player by name as they arrive.
- Team name game: players introduce themselves and name one thing they want to improve this season. Coach writes it down — visibly. Players see their goals being recorded.
- Small-sided games: 2v2 or 3v3, rotating every 4 minutes. Every player plays with every other player at least once.
- Coach names three positive moments from the session — not outcomes, behaviours: 'I saw Marcus track back when we lost the ball. That's effort.'
- End with: 'Same time next week. Same energy.'
