Why this drill works

The pre-season possession rondo reactivates technical sharpness after an off-season break. Players who spent summer without a ball lose the automatic decision-making speed that takes months to build — a 15-minute daily rondo during pre-season weeks 1 and 2 gets it back faster than any other format. The key is pace: the rondo must run at a tempo that forces one-touch quality, not two.

How to run it

  1. 6v2 rondo in a 12x12m square. Two-touch maximum. Count consecutive passes aloud as a group.
  2. After 5 minutes: one-touch maximum for outer players. Defenders sprint to a cone and back on winning possession.
  3. Progress: add a rule that the ball must travel across the square at least twice before the same player can receive again. Forces use of all four sides.
  4. Final 3 minutes: free rondo, no rules. Coach observes what has stuck.
  5. Count: best consecutive pass run of the session. Teams try to beat it next pre-season session.

  • Support angles at 45 degrees maintaining the full square — no compressing

Correct when you see

  • Two-touching when a one-touch pass was available — challenges the habit
  • Players passing to the nearest person only — spread the ball, use all four corners
