Pre-Season Shape Introduction — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Full unit adjusting to ball position before it arrives — reactive as a team
◆Why this drill works
The first tactical session of pre-season should establish the team's shape and basic positional responsibilities, not introduce new concepts. Players return after a break with the shared understanding from last season partially faded. This session reinstalls shape awareness through shadow play, then tests it in a conditioned game.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Shadow play: full squad in starting shape on half a pitch. Coach plays ball to various positions. Team adjusts shape in response. Walk first, then jog.
- Six scenarios: wide right, wide left, central build, deep defensive position, GK under press, attacking corner. Repeat each twice.
- Increase to 75% pace. Coach identifies two individual positioning corrections only.
- 7v7 or 9v9 conditioned game: team in possession scores by reaching the opponent's end zone with the ball in control. Reward for keeping shape during build-up.
- Post-game: 'Did the shape hold when we were under pressure? When did it break? Why?'

✦Coaching points
Praise when you see
- Full unit adjusting to ball position before it arrives — reactive as a team
- Back line maintaining a consistent depth — not drifting out of shape toward the ball
Correct when you see
- Players leaving their position to chase the ball — 'cover your zone'
- Shape collapsing when pressed — the panic pass is a shape problem; calm the build-out
