Pre-Season 1v1 Confidence — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Skill move attempt even when the outcome is unsuccessful — the habit is what matters
◆Why this drill works
Technical confidence in 1v1 situations drops during an off-season break. Players who were comfortable taking on defenders in May become hesitant by August. A focused pre-season 1v1 confidence session rebuilds that habit before the competitive season begins. The structure is progressive: unopposed technique first, opposed with low stakes second, fully competitive third.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Ball mastery circuit: 4 stations, 3 minutes each. Sole rolls, step-overs, outside cuts, inside-outside combination.
- 1v1 channels (4 pairs simultaneously): attacker vs defender at 60% intensity. Attacker must attempt a skill move — no bypassing with pace only.
- Intensity rises to 80%. Defender now blocks and tackles. Attacker maintains the habit of attempting the skill move.
- SSG with dribbling bonus: goal after a successful 1v1 where defender is beaten by a move = 2pts. Standard goal = 1pt.
- Final 3 minutes: every player must have attempted at least one skill move in the SSG. Coach tracks and calls out attempts.
