Why this drill works

Zonal defending in midfield — each midfielder covering a zone rather than man-marking — is the foundation of modern defensive organisation at all levels. A midfield that drops into zone positions when the opposition has the ball prevents opponents from finding pockets of space and dramatically reduces forward passes into dangerous areas.

How to run it

  1. Divide the pitch into five midfield zones with cones. Each midfielder is assigned a zone.
  2. Coach plays ball to various positions in the opposition half. Midfielders must adjust their zones in response — ball wide right: midfield shifts right; ball central: midfield compresses centrally.
  3. Add five passive attackers who stand in the midfield zones. Midfielders must maintain their zone positions while not allowing attackers to receive on the turn.
  4. Progress: attackers become active. Midfielders track runs out of zones to a maximum of 5m, then hand over.
  5. Full 9v9 with bonus for any midfield turnover using zonal positioning.

Coaching points

Praise when you see

  • Midfield shifting as a unit — not one player moving while others stay
  • Recognising when to track out of zone vs hand over

Correct when you see

  • Individual midfielders following runners out of position — leaving a zone empty is more damaging than losing a runner
  • Zonal positions too narrow when ball is wide — the shift must be full
