Why this drill works

When a team loses possession high up the pitch, the transition from attacking to defending shape must be rapid and organised. Teams that transition well prevent more goals than teams that defend well in a settled shape. This drill specifically trains the 3-5 second window between losing possession and re-establishing defensive shape.

How to run it

  1. 9v9. On a signal (FREEZE!), the team in possession wins the ball. The now-defending team has 5 seconds to establish defensive shape.
  2. Coach calls the shape requirement: back four, midfield line, striker tracking back. Names positions. Players get to their zone before 5 seconds.
  3. Remove the FREEZE: any turnover triggers the shape recovery. Count: how often does the shape form before the attack develops?
  4. Bonus for the attacking team: 2pts for any goal scored while the defensive shape is not established.
  5. Defensive bonus: 1pt for every recovery where the shape is set before the attack reaches the defensive third.

Coaching points

Praise when you see

  • Sprint pace on defensive recovery — not a jog
  • Shape forming before the ball carrier has options — the recovery is about restricting options

Correct when you see

  • Players recovering slowly and individually — the shape must form together
  • Most advanced player walking back — the striker's defensive contribution starts when possession is lost
