Why this drill works

Press-cover-shadow is the three-player defensive combination that underlies all team defending. When the pressing player goes, the covering player moves to support, and the third player shadows the dangerous passing lane. Instilling this pattern at U11-U12 means it becomes automatic by the time players move into full 11v11.

How to run it

  1. Three defenders, one attacker with ball in a 20x15m grid.
  2. Defender 1 presses the ball. Defender 2 moves to cover (goal-side of D1, 3m deeper). Defender 3 shadows the nearest dangerous passing lane.
  3. Walk through the pattern three times before any live play.
  4. At 70%: attacker can pass but cannot dribble. Defenders maintain press-cover-shadow on every pass.
  5. At 100%: full play. Award defenders 1pt for every turnover using the correct press-cover-shadow structure.

Coaching points

Praise when you see

  • Press player pressing on the angle — forcing the attacker inside or outside
  • Cover player visible to the press player — not hiding behind the attacker

Correct when you see

  • All three defenders pressing the ball — pressing in threes leaves the back empty
  • Cover player standing beside the press player rather than deeper — cover is 3m behind and across
