The one cue that matters
Quality touches even in the warm-up
◆Why this drill works
The traditional warm-up (jog, stretch, pass) doesn't activate the cognitive and technical demands that the main session will require. The possession rondo activates everything — passing technique, spatial awareness, two-touch decision-making, and physical warmth — in a single 12-minute block. It's the warm-up most senior clubs use for a reason.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- 5 outer players form a circle around 2 defenders. Defenders start in the middle.
- Outer players keep the ball. Two-touch maximum: one touch to control, one to pass.
- Defenders try to win the ball. If they touch it: swap with the player whose pass was intercepted.
- If outer players string 8 consecutive passes: defenders do 5 push-ups.
- Run for 12 minutes. Swap defenders if the same pair stays in for over 3 minutes — fatigue degrades the drill.
- Progress over the session: introduce one-touch only in the final 3 minutes.
