Why this drill works

U11-U13 matches are won and lost in transitions — the moment one team loses the ball and the other has a chance to attack. Most U11-U13 teams freeze at this moment. They win the ball and... pause. Look around. Pass backwards. The window closes. This drill drills the opposite: win the ball, and within 5 seconds the team is attacking forward. Coach the trigger: 'win it, GO'. Verbal cue from the coach when a turnover happens; players sprint forward immediately. After 4-5 sessions of this, the team's transition speed jumps measurably — and goals start appearing in the first 5 seconds after a defensive recovery.

How to run it

  1. Set up a 30×20 yard pitch with mini-goals at each end. Two teams of 3 (or 4 each for 4v4). Standard SSG rules apply.
  2. The KEY rule: when a team wins the ball through tackle, interception, or recovery, the coach calls 'GO'. The team that won the ball has 5 seconds to attempt a shot.
  3. Coach the moment of transition: as the ball is being won, the player closest to the goal should be ALREADY MOVING forward. Don't wait for the ball — assume the win, sprint forward, become an outlet.
  4. Reward: shots scored within the 5-second window count DOUBLE. Goals from steady possession count single. The scoring system tilts behaviour toward fast transitions.
  5. Run for 16 minutes — 4-minute halves with switching ends. After each half, brief reset: 'who scored a transition goal? Talk us through it'.
  6. Last 2 minutes: remove the 5-second window. Pure SSG. Watch what happens — most teams keep playing fast. The habit has been planted.
