Positional Rondo — 9v9 Shape
Rondos at U12 should do more than teach keeping the ball — they should teach where you keep it.
◆Why this drill works
Rondos at U12 should do more than teach keeping the ball — they should teach where you keep it. The positional rondo locks players into zones that mirror their 9v9 positions (3 defenders, 3 midfielders, 3 forwards), which means the passing patterns they learn in the rondo map directly to match scenarios. Players learn that the ball moves faster than any player can run, that switching play relieves pressure, and that the far side always has space. All of that in a 35×25 grid.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Divide pitch into 3 zones. 3 red players and 1 blue defender in each zone.
- Red keeps possession within their zone and between zones. Blue tries to win the ball in their zone.
- To move the ball between zones, play a pass that travels through the air or rolls across the line.
- If blue wins the ball in any zone, they keep possession and red chases.
- After 10 minutes: change the defender rotation so each player spends time in the middle zone (hardest).
- Score: red earns 1 point per 5-pass sequence. Blue earns 3 points for winning and completing 3 passes.
