4v4 with Scoring Variations
Standard 4v4 for U8s runs out of novelty after 5 minutes.
◆Why this drill works
Standard 4v4 for U8s runs out of novelty after 5 minutes. The scoring variations format keeps the game fresh by changing what counts as a 'goal' every 5 minutes. Dribble-through scoring emphasises the ball mastery work from technical blocks. Pass-through scoring introduces the pass-and-move concept without isolating it in a drill. Target player scoring teaches supporting runs. The variations aren't gimmicks — each one tilts the game toward a specific technical outcome while looking exactly like a match.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Minutes 1–5: Standard 4v4. Score by putting the ball in the mini goal. Normal rules.
- Minutes 6–10: Dribble-through scoring. A goal only counts if the scorer dribbles the ball through the goal (not a shot). Encourages close control.
- Minutes 11–15: Pass-through scoring. The ball must be passed through the goal from a teammate — no dribbling it through. Forces combination play.
- Minutes 16–20: Target player scoring. Each team picks one 'target player'. A goal only counts if it came from a pass to the target player. Teaches supporting runs.
- Rotate the target players at minute 18 so everyone experiences the target role.
