The one cue that matters
Quick decisions in tight space
◆Why this drill works
Modern football is decided in the 5 seconds after a turnover. Most grassroots SSGs don't engineer transition moments — both teams are always set. This game forces the issue: the team that just lost the ball has a delayed reset (counted out), giving the winning team a numerical advantage to exploit. Kids learn to recognise the transition window and play forwards immediately, rather than back-passing when they win it. By U13, this becomes one of the most decisive habits to develop.

▶How to run it
- Standard 4v4 or 5v5 to mini-goals.
- When a team wins the ball, coach calls 'GO' and counts down from 8.
- During the 8 seconds, the team that LOST the ball cannot tackle — only screen passing lanes.
- Attacking team must shoot or get the ball into the final third before 8 seconds expire.
- After 8 seconds, normal rules resume (full pressing on both teams).
